♥ Day 70 ♥ Mono Orange Juice Diet.

Day 70 ♥
I have been reading the detailed account of the addition of Orange juice to the diets of 341 children, from 1930– 1931, in Mooseheart, Illinois, 'City of Children' village.
The account is written by Dr. Milton T. Hanke and it makes for pretty interesting reading.

There are very detailed accounts of the children's diets before the Orange juice was added, and the diet was kept the same during the tests, with the only exception being the addition of 16 oz (in two lots of 8oz) of fresh raw squeezed Orange juice daily, with the addition of a half a lemon (for taste) to each 8oz Orange juice serving.

The diets, to me, seemed woefully lacking in fruit. The average fruit consumption being less than half a pound of fruit per day.
So I would imagine that the children would have been getting less than optimal vitamin C.
This is despite the daily calories seeming quite adequate, with an average of 2, 545 calories for the girls, and 3,064 for the boys. The age range of the children was ten to seventeen.

Interestingly, after the test period, the Orange juice was reduced to just 3oz daily, and the benefits that the children enjoyed from the two 8oz daily drinks of Orange juice was greatly diminished.

So, the major recorded benefits to the children were 57% less cavities and 83% less gum disease. And in addition the children's growth rates increased by 75%.
A control group who had the same diet, but did not receive the Orange juice, had no decrease in cavities and gum disease, and no improved growth rate.

It is sad to think that the average diet of many of today's children contains even less fresh fruit than the Mooseheart children, and it just goes to show that even without taking any of the processed foods out of their diet, children on a SAD diet could hugely benefit from two big glasses of fresh Orange juice daily.
Taking into account my previous post (on Day 59) on the benefits to children and prison inmates of fresh fruit and Orange juice, it is clear that the addition of fresh raw fruit is so very important to the mental and physical well-being of our Western Society.
Even without reducing the cooked and processed foods, fresh fruit would make such a valuable addition to our children's dietary. And then imagine if the amount of processed foods were reduced what the amazing effects could be.

So looking at the United States in the 2000 cencus, there were 76.6 million children enrolled in schools.I estimate (based on the costs of my Biodynamic Oranges) that this would cost around $2.50 per day for 2, 8oz glasses of Biodynamic Orange juice.

So, for all the school children to have free fresh Biodynamic Orange juice it would cost $191.5 million dollars per day.
Seeing as the US spends $1948 million on defence each day, the cost of $191.5 million per day on Biodynamic Oranges seems a small price to pay to defend what is vitally important— our children's health.

And as a beautiful bonus there would be thousands of lovely groves of chemical free Oranges. So more tree cover, more oxygen and a better soil structure, as well as the possibility for many to work in a chemical free environment surrounded by fruit trees ♥

♥ Day 62 Mono Orange Juice ♥

Day 61 ♥
I have decided to remain on the Orange juice for now, but I am taking my decision day-to-day. I have some elimination continuing, and it still seems the best option to me to continue with the Orange juice. I feel to add mixed fruits to my diet would slow the body in its cleansing efforts.
I am feeling strong and  have good energy and endurance which pleases me ♥

I have started to look through the doctor's account of the very positive effects Orange juice mixed with Lemon juice had on the gums and teeth of the 341 children.
It is quite scientific in nature, but I am inspired by the comment in the foreword (written by the twelve doctors who made up the Chigargo Dental Research Club):

"Definite dietary instructions were given and in certain cases massive doses of orange juice were recommended. These cases were carefully watched and tabulated and it was at this time that certain soft tissue changes were noticed. The effects were so startling that in some instances the members of our group were soon prescribing large amounts of orange juice in all cases showing soft tissue pathology."

There is very detailed data of the diet of the 341 children, including what fruit they ate, and I feel that this will be a very interesting study to investigate.

I am still loving the weather, and find its heat a perfect accompaniment to the Orange juice diet.

The Orange juice today tasted even better than usual after a day of water ♥

♥ Day 60 Mono Orange Juice ♥

Day 60 ♥
I was thinking about making this my last day on the Golden Nectar, but I got a couple of signs from the world of Orange synchronicity that it was not quite the time to stop yet.
Despite my weight being down, and despite the house-cleaning and elimination that is going on, I feel that I have more endurance than when on a mixed fruit diet.
One of the reasons for this is that when I am carrying Cappi (and the same was true with Camlo, my elder son, when I was on a mono Orange juice diet in 1995) I feel like I could carry him forever. My muscles do not seem to get tired.
When I carried Cappi (13kg/28.6lbs) home from the railway station yesterday, it was more of a joy for my muscles, rather than an effort. And it felt like if I had needed to carry on for another couple of hours then it would not have been an issue.
Another real bonus to the Orange juice diet is feeling in harmony with the heat. I have felt the hot temperatures to be delicious, and I have relished the heat and the sun on my body.
When I hear other people saying how hot they are, then I realize that I am on a different planet to them—The Orange Planet!

I am excited to study a book that I got off the internet.
If you have been following this blog, you may remember the Day 39 post, where I was talking about the California Fruit Growers Exchange and the research they conducted on children's dental health and diet.
Well, with a bit of internet investigating, I managed to get hold of the detailed original report of this research. The book was published in 1934, and is in excellent condition with many photographic plates, and it is filled with data that helps to show the great improvement in gum and tooth health when the children had no other dietary change except the daily addition of two big glasses of Orange juice (with some added Lemon juice).

I do not necessarily hold faith in science, but I do think that having well-documented studies by members of the medical profession, can be very useful in presenting the benefits of fruit to those who desire documented data.

♥ Day 39 Mono Orange Juice ♥

Day 39 ♥

Today, I recieved in the post a small booklet published by the Californian Fruit Growers Exchange in, I believe, the 1930's.
It is called 'World's New Dental Story' and gives the amazing results obtained when children already on a so-called 'excellent diet' had the addition to their diet of two daily 8 ounce glasses of Orange juice (with the juice from  half a Lemon added to each glass to enhance the flavour).
The children's diet remained exactly the same except for the addition of the Orange juice.
At the end of the year the researchers found that:
Tooth Decay was decreased by...57%
Gum Troubles were reduced by...83%
Growth rate was improved by...75%

The juice was raw and fresh squeezed using Sunkist Oranges.
When the amount of fresh Orange juice was reduced to only 3oz daily (instead of the two lots of 8oz) the amount of decay increased once again, and gum troubles also increased.

This is very inspiring to me, especially because the children's initial daily diet was high in dairy products (1 quart of milk and 1.5 oz of butter), which did not seem to help improve the state of their teeth, and it was only when Orange/Lemon juice was added that their dental health improved noticably.

I  think that examples such as these, of the power of fruit helping health are very precious. It seems that fewer such studies are being carried out today, and I wonder if the pharmacuetical industry and the processed food industry have more power now than they did 80 years ago.

Day 19 Mono Orange Juice

Day 19.
The Biodynamic Oranges have finished for the moment, but there are plenty of great Organic ones at the local wholefood store for just $2 per kilo (2.2lbs). They seem low in acidity, nicely tree-ripened and with a good flavour.
This Orange juice diet, I have juiced the vast majority of my Oranges in my mouth.
The advantages to this are that I get to taste the individual flavour of each Orange, plus it is a nice slow way to savour the juice.
The disadvantage is that the Orange juice is in quite a bit of contact with my front teeth.
The Oranges I have been using are nice and ripe and I rinse my mouth with water afterward, and I floss my teeth—so I feeel that these factors will help to ensure a lack of damage to tooth enamel.

Fruity fare:
Morning—the juice of 12 Biodynamic Valencias (the last ones!)Juiced in my mouth
Afternoon—the juice of 10 Organic Valencias, juiced in my mouth.

The Organic Valencias, are also pretty small, but a wee bit bigger than the Biodynamic ones. Therefore, during this Orange juice diet, I am not taking more juice than usual, but using more Oranges because they are smaller.

Exercise:
40 minutes fast walking.
